My Brother Jim

Posted in Uncategorized on April 14, 2011 by Gwendolen De Lacy

This is the portrait Maggie took of her brother in the early 1950s. When she left for Australia in 1961, he and the rest of the family, didn’t even know she’d left the country!  She didn’t see him again until 2007 when he travelled from the USA to Melbourne for the launch of Maggie Diaz – Into the Light at The City Museum.  It had been 50 years since they had seen each other and it was one of the great joys of Maggie’s life to spend time with her brother again. She hopes to return the favour if she can make it back to Chicago some time soon.  Special thanks to Dawn Reid, Maggie’s niece and Dawn’s husband Tom Wilder, who also made the trip out here and made the reunion possible.

Pictured above are Jim Reid, Dawn Reid (daughter of Tom Reid) and Maggie at The City Museum Launch, 10th March 2007.

We have found many versions of this image, which dates back to early 1950s Chicago.  Maggie returned to this location again and again to capture the haunting figure and still (even today) she has an on-going fascination with accidental ‘still life’ moments that are not human, but very much alive.
